Grand Rapids FC faced Aquinas College in its last preseason action before the start of regular season play, and behind an early goal from forward Tyler Fischer and a second half brace from forward Joe Broekhuizen, defeated the Saints 5-0.
Fischer’s goal set the tone for the Boys in Blue in the 8th minute of play as he collected a ball in the Aquinas box and placed it far post to put the visitors ahead 1-0.
Much like the first two preseason match-ups, GRFC saw the majority of possession.
“I was very pleased with our team’s performance tonight,” said head coach George Moni. “The players displayed a great attitude and winning mentality throughout the game. We showed high technical ability in possession and combined that with intuition and mobility off the ball.”
The early minute strike is the only one that found the back of the net for Grand Rapids in the first half, however, as the Blues took a 1-0 advantage into halftime.
In the second half, the scoring started early and continued all the way until the end of the period.
Defender Nick Groenewold was the first to get on the score sheet after the break, heading in a cross off a short corner in the 47th minute.
Minutes later, Joe Broekhuizen made the most of a second opportunity on frame as he slipped a shot past the Aquinas keeper after his initial header struck only woodwork.
Broekhuizen doubled his tally in the 77th minute, chipping the onrushing Saints keeper to extend the GRFC lead. An own-goal by Aquinas in the 86th then closed out the scoring for a 5-0 Grand Rapids victory.
“This week our work was focused on increasing speed of play while building out of the back and quality distribution in the final third,” said Moni. “All the games we have played so far, we have dealt with opponents that were very disciplined tactically in low pressure defending. Today we displayed much more patience in build up, better service from the flanks, and obviously, better finishing.”
“Happy with the outcome but we have more work to do. Looking forward to next week.”
With preseason now complete, GRFC looks ahead to next Friday, May 6, when regular season play begins against in-town opponent Ole Soccer Club. First kick for the opening match of the 2016 season is scheduled for 7:45 p.m.
