GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Grand Rapids Football Club has re-signed defender Trent Vegter for the 2018 National Premier Soccer League season.
Vegter, 20, made eight competitive appearances with the Boys in Blue during the 2017 campaign. Known for his long throw-ins, the 6-foot-2 defender originally joined GRFC in 2016, when he appeared in nine competitive matches and helped the club win the Great Lakes West Conference title.
The Hudsonville, Mich., native recently completed his junior year at Calvin College, tallying four goals and 10 assists for the Knights. A two-time MIAA Defensive Player of the Week winner in 2017, Vegter was subsequently honored as the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player and was named to the All-MIAA First Team for the third consecutive season.
Adding to his junior accolades, Vegter was recognized as the D3soccer.com Defender of the Year for the second straight campaign. Vegter was also named to the United Soccer Coaches Division III All-America First Team and the CoSIDA Division III Academic All-District 6 Team. In all, Vegter has recorded eight goals and 22 assists in 75 appearances with the Knights.
Prior to his collegiate career, Vegter won a pair of MHSAA state championships with Hudsonville Unity Christian High School in 2012 (Division 2) and 2014 (Division 3).
GRFC will begin the home portion of its 2018 NPSL schedule on Sunday, May 27 against the Milwaukee Torrent at 6 p.m. at Houseman Field. Additional home dates confirmed by the NPSL include June 3, June 8, June 15, June 22 and June 29.
