GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Grand Rapids Football Club has signed defender Kieran Geldenhuys and midfielder Derek Sutton for the 2018 National Premier Soccer League season.
Geldenhuys started all 21 matches for Butler University as a junior in 2017, recording two goals and a pair of assists as the Bulldogs reached the third round of the 2017 College Cup. The 6-foot, 175-pound midfielder notched two helpers in Butler’s opening-round 2-0 win versus Lipscomb University on Nov. 16.
A native of South Africa, Geldenhuys was named to the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week for the period lasting Oct. 16-22. In total, Geldenhuys has tallied three goals and four assists in 55 appearances with the Bulldogs.
Prior to his collegiate career, Geldenhuys spent two years as a scholar with Notts County of Sky Bet League Two, the fourth tier of English soccer. Before signing for the Magpies, Geldenhuys attended Jumeirah English Speaking School in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where he captained the program to four consecutive Middle Eastern interschool soccer tournament titles.
Sutton recently concluded his sophomore season at Butler, starting 18 matches, including all three 2017 College Cup contests. In all, the 5-foot-10, 160-pound midfielder has made 31 appearances in two seasons with the Bulldogs.
Prior to his collegiate career, Sutton played four seasons with the Indiana Fire Development Academy. The Waterloo, Ind., native captained the Indiana Fire under-18 squad during the 2015-16 campaign.
GRFC returns to Houseman Field on Friday, May 4 as the Boys in Blue host Livonia City FC at 7:30 p.m. Additional home dates include May 19, May 27, June 3, June 8, June 15, June 22, June 29 and July 7.
