GRFC Women Add Three International Players

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Grand Rapids Football Club has signed defender Melissa Roy, midfielder Cindy Lay and forward Jodian Morris for the 2018 United Women’s Soccer season.

Roy joins the Ladies in Blue after spending the 2017 UWS campaign with the Calgary Foothills. The 5-foot-6 defender recently completed her senior season at Universite Laval, where she was named a CIS First-Team All-Star for the fourth consecutive year. During her collegiate career, Roy was a two-time CIS Championship All-Star Team selection (2014, 2016), and was honored by the national governing body of university sport in Canada as its rookie of the year in 2014.

A native of Levis, Quebec, Roy has represented Canada at the U20 level, making three appearances at the 2012 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Japan. She started and played all 90 minutes of Canada’s 6-0 victory against Argentina.

Lay arrives in West Michigan after playing the last two years with the WNPL’s Calder United SC. The 5-foot-3 midfielder also spent two seasons with rival FC Bulleen Lions from 2014-15, scoring 12 goals in her final campaign with the club.

A native of Dili, Timor-Leste, Lay has experience at the highest level of Australian soccer, making 20 appearances over parts of three seasons with the W-League’s Melbourne Victory (2012-13, 2015). She has also featured for Australia at the U20 level.

Morris signs with GRFC after spending the 2017 season with the WPSL’s Fresno Freeze. The 5-foot forward played two years at Wayland Baptist University from 2014-15, ranking second in program history with 26 career goals. After setting the Pioneers’ single-season scoring record with 19 goals, Morris garnered All-SAC First Team honors. As a junior, Morris led the team with seven goals, and was named SAC Newcomer of the Year as well as a All-SAC Second-Team selection.

Prior to transferring to WBU, Morris began her collegiate career at Navarro College, scoring 17 goals and six assists in 18 appearances with the Bulldogs during the 2012 campaign. The Spanish Town, Jamaica, native has also represented her country at the U20 level.

GRFC returns to action on Sunday as the Ladies in Blue host Lansing United at 5 p.m. at Grandville High School. Additional home dates confirmed by UWS include May 20, June 2, June 30 and July 8.
