Matt Whelan Returns for 2019 NPSL Season

Grand Rapids, MI – Grand Rapids Football Club announced this morning the return of Matt Whelan for the 2019 National Premier Soccer League season.

Whelan, a forward who hails from Cork, Ireland, made twelve appearances and led the Boys in Blue with eight goals during the 2018 campaign.  He is currently a redshirt sophomore at Davenport University, where he started seventeen games and scored six goals for the Panthers this past Fall.

“I am delighted to be back playing with GRFC this summer” said Whelan.  “I can’t wait to get started with the boys again and we hope we can go further in the playoffs than we did last year.”

GRFC Head Coach Lewis Robinson commented “Matt had a great season last year and we know he has a lot more to offer as he grows and continues to improve.  As a young player I am really excited about what he can bring to our team and the attacking threat he brings for the club.  We are very excited to have him back on the field in blue this summer!”
