Howell, 25, joins the Boys in Blue after spending the 2017 campaign with the USL’s Pittsburgh Riverhounds. The 5-foot-10, 170-pound forward appeared in 15 competitive matches during his lone season with the Hounds.
A native of Manchester, Jamaica, Howell also played one season with CD Dragon of the Salvadoran Primera Division. He featured in all four of Dragon’s matches in the 2016 CONCACAF Champions League group stage and, most notably, scored a 77th-minute equalizer in a 2-1 defeat at the Portland Timbers on Aug. 3.
Howell began his professional career at Waterhouse FC of the Jamaican Premier League from 2013-16, accumulating 15 goals for the club. During the 2014 campaign, Howell made his CONCACAF Champions League debut, appearing in all four group stage matches for Waterhouse, including a pair of games against DC United.
Prior to turning pro, Howell played for Royal Lakes FC of the St. Catharine Football Association from 2009-13. In 2010, Howell was named the league’s Most Valuable Player and Most Outstanding Junior Player after scoring 13 goals and leading Royal Lakes to the league title. He also played four years at Spanish Town High School, netting 27 total goals.
