Grand Rapids, MI – Grand Rapids Football Club announced today that Riko Sagara will return to play for GRFC Women during the 2019 United Womens Soccer season. Sagara, a Midfielder, returns to play for the Girls in Blue after spending the 2018 season with Lansing United. Because of the late change in coach in 2018 to James Gilpin, Sagara was not permitted to play with GRFC since Gilpin was a GVSU coach at the time.
Sagara helped lead GRFC to a UWS National Championship in 2017, making 14 appearances and scoring 3 goals. She completed her Junior season at GVSU this Fall after two years at NAIA powerhouse Martin Methodist, setting an NAIA single season record 36 assists during her sophomore season. During her time at GVSU this Fall, she was named GLIAC Attacking Player of the Year with fifteen assists and seven goals. She was also named an NCAA D2 First Team All American this past weekend at the United Soccer Coaches awards.
“I am glad that I’m back and playing with GRFC again” said Sagara. “I can’t wait to play for coach James and with all the GRFC Women players and hopefully we can bring a championship back to Grand Rapids again this year.”
GRFC Women Head Coach James Gilpin commented “As a group we are very excited to have Riko back in the team. During the inaugural season she was instrumental and provided another attacking resource. She brings great vision and creativity to the team which I believe will compliment other areas of the team. As a person she is committed and passionate about the sport, and I think the fans will really enjoy seeing her in blue again this summer.”
