GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Grand Rapids Football Club has signed midfielder Daire O’Riordan and forward Matt Whelan for the 2018 National Premier Soccer League season.
O’Riordan, 19, recently completed his freshman year at Davenport University, earning Second Team All-GLIAC honors after recording two goals and six assists in 18 starts with the Panthers. On Oct. 15, the 5-foot-9, 145-pound midfielder scored with two seconds remaining in double overtime to clinch a 2-1 win versus Northwood University.
A native of Cork, Ireland, O’Riordan made four appearances with Cork City in the 2016-17 UEFA Youth League. CCFC defeated Finnish side HJK 1-0 on aggregate in the first round of the Domestic Champions Path before falling 4-1 on aggregate to Italian powerhouse AS Roma in the second round.
Whelan, 19, signed with DU prior to the 2017 season, but the Cork, Ireland, native has yet to see varsity game action for the Panthers.
The 6-foot-3, 182-pound forward tallied eight goals in 22 appearances over parts of two seasons with Cobh Ramblers of the SSE Airtricity League of Ireland First Division, the second tier of Irish soccer. During the 2017 campaign, Whelan bagged six goals in 19 appearances to help the Rams finish second (16-9-3, 51 pts.) in the eight-team league.
GRFC will begin the home portion of its 2018 NPSL schedule on Sunday, May 27 against the Milwaukee Torrent at 6 p.m. at Houseman Field. Additional home dates confirmed by the NPSL include June 3, June 8, June 15, June 22 and June 29.
