GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Grand Rapids Football Club has signed goalkeeper Brendan Brown for the 2018 National Premier Soccer League season.

Brown, 21, recently finished his sophomore year at the University of the Incarnate Word, posting a 5-11-1 record with a 1.38 goals against average, a 0.688 save percentage and one shutout after starting all 17 regular season games. He kept a clean sheet on Oct. 22 in the Cardinals’ 1-0 overtime win versus CSU Bakersfield.

The 6-foot-1 goalkeeper began his collegiate career at Northwood University in 2016, amassing a 9-4-3 record with five shutouts while carrying the GLIAC’s highest save percentage (0.837), lowest GAA (0.83) and fewest goals against (14) in 17 appearances. During his lone season with the Timberwolves, Brown received an All-GLIAC honorable mention and earned honors as the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 18, after posting a 2-0-1 record with a 0.67 GAA, a 0.882 save percentage and one clean sheet in three starts.

A native of Huntingdon, England, Brown was a scholar at Northampton Town of Sky Bet League One, the third tier of English soccer. Following his release from the Cobblers, he played at the non-league level with Histon, Soham Town Rangers and St. Ives Town.

“I’m excited to sign with GRFC and play in Michigan for the upcoming NPSL season” said Brown.  “The club’s vision to be challenging for national championships as well as the talented coaching staff were all big draws to the club and I look forward to helping GRFC bring titles back to the city of Grand Rapids”.

GRFC Head Coach Lewis Robinson on Brown: “Brendan will be a great addition to our team in the very important goalkeeper position. He is very ambitious and has great experience playing at the top level in England and in the US for a young goalkeeper. We are excited to see him join us for his first year with GRFC”!
