GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Grand Rapids Football Club has signed goalkeeper Naoya Fugono and midfielder Jack McCarren for the 2018 National Premier Soccer League season.
Fugono recently completed his junior season at Martin Methodist College, posting an 8-5-1 record with a 1.52 goals against average, a 0.732 save percentage and two clean sheets in 17 starts. The 5-foot-10, 145-pound netminder backstopped the RedHawks to a 1-0 overtime win at Lindenwood-Belleville on Sept. 2 before blanking Oakland City at home by a 3-0 count on Sept. 16.
A native of Tokyo, Japan, Fugono earned First-Team All-SSAC accolades as a sophomore in 2016. In 35 career appearances with the RedHawks, Fugono has compiled a 12-10-3 record with a 1.45 GAA, a 0.744 save percentage and six shutouts.
McCarren joins the Boys in Blue after finishing his senior campaign at MMC, where he led the RedHawks with 14 goals, eight assists and four game-winning goals in 17 starts. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound midfielder was subsequently honored as a Second Team All-SSAC selection, marking the second consecutive season in which he earned that distinction.
A native of Dublin, Ireland, McCarren also picked up First Team All-SSAC honors as a sophomore in 2015. In total, McCarren recorded 28 goals and 15 assists in 70 appearances with the RedHawks.
GRFC returns to Houseman Field on Friday, May 4 as the Boys in Blue host Livonia City FC at 7:30 p.m. Additional home dates include May 19, May 27, June 3, June 8, June 15, June 22, June 29 and July 7.
