GRFC Disqualified From US Amateur Cup

Grand Rapids Football Club

Grand Rapids, MI – Grand Rapids Football Club was informed yesterday that the club has been disqualified from the US Amateur Cup for using too many players in the competition.

Grand Rapids FC used 29 players in the competition, changing the roster from Round 1 to Round 2, but the Amateur Cup only allows you to use 22 players during the whole of the tournament.

“We are obviously very disappointed in the outcome here, but we didn’t follow the guidelines of the tournament and will accept the decision from USASA to disqualify us” said GRFC President Matt Roberts.  “We asked two people at USASA several times whether we could change out our roster and were led to believe we could change it out entirely with no limits on that number. However, based on subsequent conversations with the USASA since Round 2, it has now been clarified that the intention of the rule is to limit rosters to 22 players in total throughout the competition.  This is my mistake as I should have ensured clarity of the rule more and us being out of the Cup falls on me.  We will shift our focus to the NPSL and Milk Cup as in years past and hopefully make Grand Rapids proud this summer.”

GRFC will play a friendly with La Raza All Stars this Saturday night at Grandville High School before opening up league play at Houseman Field against Toledo Villa FC on May 18th and hosting a quarter-final of the Milk Cup against AAFC Lumberjacks May 19th.
