GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Grand Rapids Football Club has re-signed forward Scott Doney for the 2018 National Premier Soccer League season.
Doney, 22, made 14 competitive appearances for GRFC during the 2017 campaign. On June 3, the 6-foot-5 forward potted a goal in a 2-2 draw at Ole SC. In November, Doney was selected to the 2017 Midwest Pro Soccer Combine, which was held from Dec. 18-19 at the Legacy Center Sports Complex in Brighton.
A native of Tauranga, New Zealand, Doney enjoyed a breakout rookie season with the Boys in Blue in 2016, leading the club with four goals in 12 competitive matches and starting both Midwest Region playoff matches. He was a co-Man of the Match recipient after netting a brace in GRFC’s 5-2 win versus Detroit City FC on June 10, 2016.
Doney recently completed his senior season at Midwestern State University, tallying 14 goals and two assists in 23 starts. In his lone season with the Mustangs, Doney was a two-time Heartland Conference Offensive Player of the Week honoree.
Prior to transferring to MSU, Doney played two seasons with the University at Buffalo from 2015-16, recording five goals and six assists in 37 appearances with the Bulls. Doney began his collegiate career at Marshall University, scoring once in 15 appearances for the Thundering Herd as a freshman in 2014.
GRFC returns to Houseman Field on Friday, May 4 as the Boys in Blue host Livonia City FC at 7:30 p.m. Additional home dates include May 19, May 27, June 3, June 8, June 15, June 22, June 29 and July 7.
