Grand Rapids, MI – Grand Rapids Football Club announced this morning the signing of midfielder Annie Steinlage for the 2019 United Womens Soccer season.
Steinlage led the Girls in Blue to a UWS National Championship in 2017 before taking a year off due to an injury. During that championship year, she appeared in 13 games, anchoring a midfield that was a strength all year.
She is originally from Spring Lake and played collegiately at MSU and Virginia, starting every game over her four year career. She was named All-Big Ten First Team twice and led Virginia to a Final Four appearance. In 2013 she was drafted by the NWSL’s New York Flash before playing overseas with Finnish side Vaasa IFK. She also has W-League experience playing with Ottawa Fury and Seattle Sounders.
“I am thrilled to be back playing the game that I love in the welcoming community that is Grand Rapids” said Steinlage. “My hope for this season is that we are able to continue to spark the city’s love of soccer, while inspiring young players to pursue their passions.”
GRFC Women Head Coach James Gilpin commented “We are very excited to welcome back Annie to the team. We have seen the fantastic qualities that she brings on the field but more importantly the leadership and commitment she brings off it. She is a true role model for young aspiring players and we hope the Grand Army will be ecstatic with her return.
GRFC Women return to Grandville on Friday, May 24th as the Midwest champions host Indiana Union at 7:00pm. Additional home dates include June 7th, June 8th, June 21st, and June 30th. The club will also compete in the first ever Women’s Milk Cup with competition dates being announced at a later time.
