Grand Rapids, MI – Grand Rapids Football Club announced this morning the signing of defender Austin Swiech for the 2019 National Premier Soccer League Season.
Swiech, 20, is currently a sophomore at the University of Michigan. He has made 22 appearances in two seasons with the Wolverines, starting 17 games this Fall at right back. The Jenison native helped U of M advance to the Big Ten Championship game and claim an NCAA D1 tournament berth while leading the back line to 8 clean sheets and chipping in with one goal and two assists.
In his first season with GRFC in 2018, Swiech made six appearances for the Boys in Blue, scoring a goal and registering two assists.
“I am very excited to play for GRFC again this summer” said Swiech. “Playing in front of the Grand Army is always special and I will work as hard as I can to help bring a championship to Grand Rapids.”
GRFC Head Coach Lewis Robinson commented “Austin had a break out season at Michigan this Fall and we are thrilled he will be back with us this summer. He is a very smart player that can play several different roles and we can’t wait to get him back on the field in blue this summer.”
GRFC will return to Houseman Field on Saturday, May 4th as the Boys in Blue host Livonia City at 7:30pm. Additional home dates include May 11th, May 18th, May 31st, June 9th, June 16th, June 28th, June 30th, and July 13th. The club will also compete in the Michigan Milk Cup and the US Amateur Cup with competition dates being announced at a later time.
