Grand Rapids, MI – Grand Rapids Football Club announced this afternoon the signing of Japanese Midfielder Miku Sunaga for the 2019 United Womens Soccer season.
Sunaga, originally from Tokyo, is currently a sophomore at Martin Methodist College in Tennessee and joins the Girls in Blue after two tremendous seasons for the Redhawks. She has appeared in 46 games, scoring 44 goals and registering 28 assists over her first two collegiate seasons. She has played as an attacking central midfielder, winger, and center forward and enjoys being creative in the final third of the field.
“I am so excited to be back playing in the UWS and can’t wait to play for GRFC this summer” said Sunaga. “I have heard great things about the fans from Riko and look forward to helping the team.”
GRFC Women Head Coach James Gilpin commented “I am really looking forward to working with Miku. She will add a different element to our game and I think our fans are going to really enjoy seeing her with the ball at her feet. Securing someone with Miku’s ability shows just how far we are progressing as a club and I hope she becomes a life long GRFC supporter through her experience this summer.”
GRFC Women return to Grandville on Friday, May 24th as the Midwest champions host Indiana Union at 7:00pm. Additional home dates include June 7th, June 8th, June 21st, and June 30th. The club will also compete in the first ever Women’s Milk Cup with competition dates being announced at a later time.
