Grand Rapids, MI – Grand Rapids Football Club announced this morning the return of defender Jordan Atheba for the 2019 National Premier Soccer League season.
Atheba, 25, spent the 2018 season with Martigues of Championnat National 2, the fourth tier of French soccer.
During the 2018 NPSL season, Atheba made 14 appearances for the Boys in Blue, becoming a staple at right back and leading the club to the NPSL playoffs.
Originally from Belgium, Atheba arrived in France after making two appearances for CD Eldense during the 2016-17 campaign. The Alicante club competed that season in Segunda Division B, the third tier of Spanish soccer. Atheba has also spent time in Cyprus with AEK Larnaca along with Belgian sides Eendracht Aalst, Waasland-Beveren and Standard Liege.
Atheba has represented his country in international competition, appearing in four matches at the U19 level alongside future Belgian internationals including Divock Origi and Dennis Praet. He also appeared 10 times for Belgium at the U17 level and saw action eight times with the U16 squad.
“Last year I had my first real experience in the United States with GRFC and it was a great surprise” said Atheba. “I will come back this year stronger and will give everything I have for the team and for the city. I think GRFC is one of the best clubs in the USA with great supporters so it was an easy decision to come back.”
GRFC Head Coach Lewis Robinson commented “We are really looking forward to having Jordan back with us in his second year with the club. I am sure rejoining the group this year, and being more familiar with the league and the club set up he will hit the ground running and be very successful for us. He is a top defender that can play anywhere across the backline and suits our style of play out of the back perfectly.”
GRFC will return to Houseman Field on Saturday, May 4th as the Boys in Blue host Livonia City at 7:30pm. Additional home dates include May 11th, May 18th, May 31st, June 9th, June 16th, June 28th, June 30th, and July 13th. The club will also compete in the Michigan Milk Cup and the US Amateur Cup with competition dates being announced at a later time.
