GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Grand Rapids Football Club has signed defender Nick Groenewold for the 2018 National Premier Soccer League season.
Groenewold reunites with the Boys in Blue after spending the 2017 campaign in Australia with NPL Tasmania’s Hobart Zebras. The 6-foot-2 defender won the 2017 Mitsubishi Motors Best and Fairest Medal, the NPL’s highest individual honor, after leading the Zebras to a fourth-place finish (9-6-6, 33 pts.) and a berth in the Football Federation Tasmania League Cup Quarterfinals.
During his initial stint with GRFC in 2016, Groenewold made 10 competitive appearances and started both Midwest Region playoff matches. He tallied a goal in a 5-0 victory at Aquinas College on April 29, 2016.
A native of Oak Brook, Ill., Groenewold played four seasons at Calvin College, recording 13 goals and five assists in 77 appearances with the Knights. As a senior in 2015, Groenewold garnered NSCAA Division III All-American accolades and was selected as the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player. Groenewold was also a three-time MIAA Defensive Player of the Week recipient during his final year at Calvin.
Prior to his collegiate career, Groenewold played at Timothy Christian High School in Elmhurst, Ill., where he helped the Trojans capture the 2009 IHSA Class 1A state championship.
GRFC returns to Houseman Field on Friday, May 4 as the Boys in Blue host Livonia City FC at 7:30 p.m. Additional home dates include May 19, May 27, June 3, June 8, June 15, June 22, June 29 and July 7.
