Grand Rapids, MI – Grand Rapids Football Club has announced that Defender Tony Deakin will return for the 2020 campaign, after spending one season away from the team.

“I am so excited to be back representing the Boys in Blue again” said Deakin.  “I am looking forward to the next challenge in my career and want to pass on my experience and knowledge of the game to my teammates and help create a winning culture, but also lead with the pride and fire that is needed to play for this great community.  Although I stepped away last year my passion for GRFC and the game has never left me and I am so grateful for this opportunity.”

Deakin was the captain of GRFC from 2015-2018 before stepping away for personal reasons during the 2019 season.  He made 45 appearances for GRFC in his four seasons, and plans to be a rock at the back again during the club’s first USL League Two season.

“I will be working tirelessly over the next few months to be game ready and to earn a starting spot on this highly competitive team” added Deakin.  “My wife’s patience is probably wearing thin and I don’t know if she will keep letting me say ‘one more year’ for much longer, so I plan to make this season one to remember.  I am #GRTID and plan to give everything for the GRFC faithful this summer.”
